The Enormous Radio by John Cheever

The story is about a couple who lives in New York City at the east side and who has a different life than their neighbors and friends. They like listening classic music and going to concerts.
Their life changed with  the arrival of the new radio which show them that they are not so different than the people who live around them. They discovered that they have problems too like the others which they never discussed. The radio helped them ( jim and Irene)  opening their real thoughts for each other and that ended in a bad way.
For me the radio was a symbol of  all new things and change.Like in the beginning Irene could not change the decoration of the living room with the radio's arrival because the living room was a part of her .And they could not even change their thoughts for each other with time.Because they were like the others around them they could not forget their old life and change their character.
To sum up i can say that people can change their life style but not their self , their real thoughts.

  1. you mentioned a couple of good points here - the idea that "we"re different from others but aren't really.. as well as the difficulty to accept change... I agree that it is not an easy feat to achieve - to change oneself, but I believe it is possible, little by little, step by step if one really wants to change. I guess it's more difficult and maybe even impossible to change some aspects which are ingrained in one's character, but things that are connected to perceptions and attitudes may change over time... what do you reckon?
